Children also have a universal fear of abandonment. This fear can be particularly intense when children are young, but also lasts well into the teenage years. Don't be the "Absent Parent" Children learn that parents are not always around, and that life involves painful and sometimes unexpected loss.

In these circumstances, the parent may be willing to be more involved with the children's lives but simply incapable of doing so. The sense of loss on the children's part can be great, regardless of the reason for the problem.
