Research, development, and better production management have made these efficiencies possible. These efficiencies, however, have generated or been associated with a variety of problems related to the quality of our environment. The relationship between the efficiency of agricultural production and potential environmental quality problems is more pronounced as methods of agricultural production and processing become more intensive. Many of these potential environmental quality problems are associated with the excesses from agricultural production operations.

Crops having the highest value per unit land utilize the greatest amount of fertilizer per unit of land area. Potatoes, fruits and nuts, vege­ tables, and sugar beets are among the crops on which the fertilizer use has been the highest. Fertilizers have been profitable for farmers and have played an important part in providing consumers with an abundant and low cost food supply. On soils of low natural fertility, initial response in yields is large for a rela­ tively small amount of fertilizer.
